About the ASA

“In 1993, the deep seeded vision of the Association hit a historic milestone when Malta was chosen to host the Games for the Small States of Europe”

The Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) saw its inception in 1925 as the Amateur Swimming Association of Malta. Throughout its many iterations, it consistently worked towards three major ambitions: to champion the progression and success of Maltese water-athletes; to engender that success through the provision of adequate facilities and organisational support; and to promote aquatics sports in Malta, endorsing the substantial benefits this brings to the greater community.

Its inauguration was a result of an accumulated desire to see Malta’s water polo team competing at the Olympics. Specifically, Lord Plumer, the Governor of Malta in the early 1920s, had planted the seed of ambition for the local team, with his sights set on the Paris Olympic Games of 1924. Although his plans were derailed when his term expired, the competitive intention for the team never lost momentum. The Association was created to bring this vision to fruition.

water polo

The ASA organises water polo competitions for males and females from junior to senior levels. The senior National team participates in several and various international tournaments.

Swimming is one of the main activities of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta. It has been established as part of the aquatic sports calendar since the association's existence.

Artistic Swimming

Artistic swimming is a hybrid form of swimming, dance, and gymnastics, consisting of swimmers performing a synchronised routine of elaborate moves in the water, accompanied by music.

open water

Open Water Swims, be it long distance swimming or Marathon swimming, are organised by Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club under the auspicious of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta
